On June 25, 2016 at approximately 5:00PM uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 3 District Welland responded to a residence in the area of Erie Street and Canal Bank Street in Dain City / Welland. Officers went to the house and found a man in a state of mental health crisis.

Uniform officers spoke with man for some time as he refused to leave the residence. During the course of the conversation officers became aware that the man may have access to weapons. Officers contained the residence and requested the assistance of the NRPS Emergency Task Unit (ETU).

Out of a concern for public safety officers evacuated the surrounding homes and closed roads in the area. The K9 Unit and members of the NRPS Crisis Negotiator Team attended along with ETU.

At approximately 10:30PM the male agreed to surrender himself to officers. The male was apprehended under the Mental Health Act of Ontario. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The male was not injured.

Three weapons were seized in the residence by Detectives from the 3 District Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB). They were secured as a matter of public safety.

The NRPS would like to thank the Dain City community for their patience as we worked to bring this incident to a safe and peaceful resolution.

  • Connecting Niagara does just that. They put me in touch with key representatives in the area that understood what I was trying to achieve. Together we achieved so much more.
