Celebrate Seniors’ Month: Living Your Best Life

The Niagara Story Place sponsored by Calhoun Sportswear

Mayor Frank Campion's June Message: The City of Welland and other cities across Ontario are celebrating “Living Your best Life” Senior’s Month this June.

According to the 2016 Canada Statistics, 21.3% of Welland’s population consists of people 65 years-of-age or older. That’s a considerable difference to our 14 and under age group, which is 14.8%. Seniors are now surpassing our youth population. How does this affect or city?  It places us at an advantage because we now have a generous group of active happy seniors who assist in making this community a better place to raise families.

The City of Welland and other cities across Ontario are celebrating “Living Your best Life” Senior’s Month this June. Please join us in applauding all the seniors in our city on June 1, at the Welland Community Wellness Complex (WCWC) for a flag raising ceremony, live entertainment, and refreshments.

Our seniors plan to showcase their musical talent on June 4, with a live concert performed by the Velvetones. This group is comprised of people 50 years-of-age and up who have a passion for singing and entertaining. With a small entry fee, you can enjoy the concert, socialize with refreshments, and enter to win some door prizes.

The celebrations continue throughout the month, with a Strawberry Social at the WCWC on June 9, and then gain musical momentum on June 11, when the Mandolin Orchestra of Niagara brings a performance to the WCWC Theatre.

Seniors’ Month festivities reach Market Square on June 17, with the Welland Farmers’ Market Berry Bonanza. This event is a market favourite, luring people from all over Niagara and as far as Toronto. A large majority of market attendees are 50 years of age or older.

June closes with a senior’s forum on June 21, when The Welland Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, the Town of Pelham, Thorold Age Friendly Community, and Niagara Age Friendly, join together for an information day of lectures and learning. Key speakers will share research and experience on the topics of “Celebrating the Older Adult” and “Empowering the Older Adult.” There is a registration fee for this event, which is located at Amici’s Banquet and Convention Centre in Thorold.

There’s an abundance of events this June to commemorate and appreciate seniors in our city. Seniors are volunteers, caregivers, decision-makers, and influential members of our community. On behalf of Welland City Council and myself, I want to express our gratitude to all our amazing seniors for their dedication and support.

For more details on these events, please call 905 735-1700 ext. 4000 or visit our website at www.welland.ca .

  • A great community service to keep everyone informed. Thank you for this!
