Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Giveaway Saturday, June 17

The Niagara Story Place sponsored by Calhoun Sportswear

Residents can help themselves to a free tree to plant on their own property at the Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Giveaway at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre parking lot from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out.

The City of St. Catharines’ rain barrel sale is set for Saturday, June 17 and this year’s event has an added bonus: free trees.

Residents can help themselves to a free tree to plant on their own property at the Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Giveaway at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre parking lot from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until supplies run out.

“Everyone knows how important trees are to our environment and our community,” said Phil Cristi, acting director of Parks, Recreation and Culture Services. “We know residents are interested in the benefits of having trees on their property and we want to make it easier for them to plant new trees.”

The free tree give-a-way kicks off the City’s efforts promoting tree plantings on private property to help grow the urban forest in St. Catharines. Trees will be available on a first come, first served basis in three-gallon pots and are about three-feet tall. They should easily fit inside a standard car. Residents can chose from four different varieties: Shademaster Honeylocusts; Tulip Trees; Freeman Maples and Redmond Lindens.

To receive a free tree, residents must agree to plant and maintain the tree on private property in the City of St. Catharines, ideally in their own yards, and not on boulevards, along streets or in City parks. Proof of St. Catharines residency is required (such as a driver’s license), and each household is limited to one tree. Forestry experts from the City will be available to answers questions.

As in past years, rain barrels will be on sale at a discounted rate of $40 per barrel, cash only. Rain barrels will be available on a first come, first served basis. Proof of St. Catharines residency is required, and each household is limited to two rain barrels.

Residents are not required to purchase a rain barrel to collect a free tree, but are welcome to do so if they choose. Visit www.stcatharines.ca/BarrelsAndTrees   or call 905.688.5600 for more information about the Rain Barrel Sale and Free Tree Give-A-Way.
