Museum collecting woolly donations

The Niagara Story Place sponsored by Calhoun

From Saturday, Nov. 25 to Sunday, Jan. 7 the museum will collect warm woolly mittens, hats, scarves, socks and other gently used winter clothing for families and children in need through its annual Mitten Tree.

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre is calling on the community to join in its woolly stand against the cold.

From Saturday, Nov. 25 to Sunday, Jan. 7 the museum will collect warm woolly mittens, hats, scarves, socks and other gently used winter clothing for families and children in need through its annual Mitten Tree. All winter clothing donations will go to local families through Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold and Out of the Cold.

"Our winters can be harsh," said Kathleen Powell, museum curator. "There’s always a tremendous need for hats, mitts and other winter wear and we want to help keep children and families warm so they can enjoy the season."

The museum’s Mitten Tree campaign kicks off with a knitting workshop and other activities Saturday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can also enjoy sipping hot chocolate, making a hand-made gift and other crafts and taking part in a special Mixed Media Memories workshop the museum is offering in partnership with the Junior Creative Writers. Visit www.stcatharinesmuseum.com for more information. Admission is by donation

The museum will also continue to accept new, unwrapped gifts for children up to 16 years old as part of the City’s Tree of Little Angels campaign. Find "Little Angel" tags on trees at the museum and other City facilities, purchase a gift for that child and return the gift with the "Little Angel" tag attached to a City facility by Friday, Dec. 8. Visit www.stcatharines.ca/LittleAngels for more information.

  • Thanks Debi. I follow Connecting Niagara on Twitter and Facebook as well. It's nice to have a site that promotes local events and organizations. We appreciate the support and promotion of our event.
