Niagara's Mobile Closet Joins Start Me Up Niagara

Niagara’s Mobile Closet joins Start Me Up Niagara Team –Start Me Up Niagara (SMUN) is very excited to announce the amalgamation of Niagara’s Mobile Closet (NMC) and SMUN to help those most in need in our communities.

SMUN and NMC have a long history of ensuring that those living in low income areas and those experiencing homelessness have access to clean, new clothes, hygiene products and other community services. This mobile program allows individuals easier access to clothing, allows individuals to grow and to participate.

By amalgamating, Niagara’s Mobile Closet and Start Me Up Niagara give a life line to a locally born movement while working with various communities across Niagara. NMC has a goal to mobilize innovative solutions in making clothing and hygiene necessities more accessible and in return we engage the community. Amy Whittaker, Program Coordinator says,

“Evidently clothing is needed, budgets are stretched too thin and many Niagara residents are living in extreme poverty. Because of this NMC has collaborated with many agencies to mobilize services to our shoppers. If we have anything, we’ve got tenacity, sheer and utter belief in what we are accomplishing here.”

Since November 2020 NMC has served thousands of people with respect and dignity. Our events and mini closets initiatives speak for themselves serving low-income and unsheltered community members. We have our power in volunteers and clothing generously donated by Niagara residents. We are by nature of this work seeing the community invested in the community.

Low barrier service is fundamentally important in this program. Shoppers attend our events with “no questions asked” and we plan to keep it that way. The beauty in free giving shows the community member who is struggling that their community has them covered, in NMC’s case from head to toe. Start Me Up Niagara knows all too well the benefits to low barrier service. Laura Dumas, Executive Director of Start Me Up Niagara says “There is true value in this service and has offered us an opportunity to work together and move forward for all those living across Niagara. We are pleased to join together and continue to provide access to these
much needed services in our community.”

Our current wish list of items can be found on NMC’s Social media platforms Facebook and Instagram.

Working Together. Moving Forward. Together we can accomplish great things.

  • Thanks Debi. I follow Connecting Niagara on Twitter and Facebook as well. It's nice to have a site that promotes local events and organizations. We appreciate the support and promotion of our event.
