The Niagara Regional Police Service is reminding cyclists to keep their investment safe by following these tips;
The Niagara Region has over 200 scenic routes for cycling. With a large selection of bicycle routes and trails throughout the area it's become a popular destination for cyclists from all over.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is reminding cyclists to keep their investment safe by following these tips;
- Use high quality locks that arent easily cut with bolt cutters
- Lock the bike frame and wheels together
- Secure your bike to a truly stationary object, a road sign can be easily unscrewed and your bike lifted over the top
- Dont leave your bike outside overnight
Assuming the thief will attempt to ride the bike away:
- Loosen the stem from the steer tube, remove one or both pedals, or disable the chain.
- If you're planning an overnight visit at a hotel ask if they have a secure indoor storage area for bikes.
- Dont assume your bike secured to a vehicle in a parking garage is safe from thieves. Bike mounts are easily cut off with a saw allowing thieves to take all of the bikes at once.
- Take a picture of your bike with your mobile phone or digital camera. In the event the bike goes missing you will have a detailed picture to provide to police. Mark your frame with your initials, phone number or some other identifying mark in a hidden spot.
- Consider registering your bike with the National Bike Registry. The National Bike Registry is a project supported by Canadian Crime Stoppers Association. Visit www.operationhandsoff.com
