Welland is gearing up for some excitement this month as the Canada’s 150 in Welland
Committee launches a 150 Day Countdown to Canada’s sesquicentennial. On February
2, this dedicated committee of volunteers will welcome 15 gifted contestants on stage
for The North Welland BIA Talent Showcase Competition. Judges will select 10
contestants from the original 15 to perform later at the Victoria Day celebrations, where
5 of the performers will advance to the final competition. This free community event
offers treats for everyone to enjoy, along with a performance by the theatrical crew from
Oh Canada Eh?

Just a few days after the launch, the 150th Committee is excited to host Rink150, an
interactive curling event at Civic Square. Everyone is welcome to come out this
February 4, to brave the ice and give curling a try. If this sport has always interested
you, bring the family and try a hands-on approach. Curling rocks and brooms will be
available onsite, along with displays and activities inside for those who want to escape
the cold. This event is weather permitting to Canadian temperatures.

Victoria Day Celebrations offer a Canadian flare of local entertainment this year. Along
with an amazing fireworks display and a variety of exciting activities, the 150th
Committee will host the second installment of the Talent Showcase Competition. Ten
performers selected from the 150 day Countdown Launch will take the stage with the
intention to advance to the final round of completion. Bring the family out to the Victoria
Day Celebrations to cheer on our local talent with Canadian pride.

The celebrations come to a magnificent conclusion on July 1, with Welland’s traditional
Canada Day celebrations. City of Welland staff, Welland Downtown BIA, and the 150th
Committee are planning an action-packed day for all ages to celebrate. Held in
downtown Welland for the second consecutive year, this Canada Day will
commemorate 150 years of Canada. The five finalists from the Talent Showcase
Competition will entertain the crowds in hopes of taking home the first place prize.
When the evening comes to a close, Bridge 13 will shine bright with Canadian colours,
while the sky lights up with a fantastic fireworks display.

Canada’s 150th birthday is bringing plenty of celebrations to Welland this year. Our
community has much to be grateful for the sesquicentennial because we have received
a grant from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, which will assist in
revamping the city’s skate park. Thanks to the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, City of
Welland Council, and this much needed grant: Welland’s youth will enjoy a re-built skate
park this year. Please take the opportunity to participate in some of these events and
appreciate everything this great country, and city, has to offer.

  • Connecting Niagara does just that. They put me in touch with key representatives in the area that understood what I was trying to achieve. Together we achieved so much more.
