The first is a public information night on October 5th from 6:30 - 8:30 at the Welland Museum Community Room.

On September 21st, Canada's 150th in Welland Ad Hoc Committee presented to Welland City Council their plans for celebrating 150 years of Canadian heritage in Welland throughout 2017.

Canada's 150th in Welland committee will engage residents and collaborate with local stakeholders to unify Welland's community for the 150th anniversary of Canada. The Celebrations will be inclusive, affordable, entertaining, and patriotic. The Celebrations will showcase Welland's past, present, future and the diverse fabric of our community.

Throughout Canada celebrations will be taking place with the largest being in Ottawa. The Welland Ad Hoc Committee has been working for almost a year to organize and create plans for the celebrations in Welland next year. While the majority of the plans will take place starting in 2017, the committee will be hosting a few events yet this fall.

The first is a public information night on October 5th from 6:30 - 8:30 at the Welland Museum Community Room. Committee representatives will be on hand to showcase the plans for 2017, take requests for community participation and provide information for volunteers looking to help out with all the events in 2017. Registration for the event is available online here

In early November a planting ceremony will take place (details are still being worked out) for 1000 red and white tulips. Welland was one of the recipients of a program offered by Vesey’s Bulbs in P.E.I. and the Canadian Garden Council, whereby communities and organizations were asked to submit an application offering reasons for the request, how the garden would be promoted and what it would mean to the community and their plans for 2017. Over 400 applications were received with Welland, Wainfleet and Lincoln being recipients of the program in Niagara.

Also to kick of yet in 2016 will be the Showcase 150 Talent Competition - be sure to watch for further details of this one. Contestants will compete throughout the year with the finalists and winner performing on July 1st, 2017.

The Committee's plans for 2017 include events offered directly as well as many more supported events throughout the year. It truly will be a community celebration showcasing Welland's past, present and future.

  • Thanks Debi. I follow Connecting Niagara on Twitter and Facebook as well. It's nice to have a site that promotes local events and organizations. We appreciate the support and promotion of our event.
