The City of Welland, in partnership with Canada’s 150th in Welland Committee, is proud to announce the Grand Opening of “Welland’s Trail 150” to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday with the planting of legacy trees on Merritt Island.

Please join us Saturday September 23, 2017 at 10:00 on Merritt Island for a tree planting and dedication ceremony. Dignitary speeches, ribbon cuttings, light fare, and a walk on Welland’s Trail 150.

In addition to providing clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature, Welland’s Trail 150 will provide shade for a future generation of runners, walkers and picnickers while the Memory Trees will serve as places of reflection for citizens who have left a legacy in the City of Welland. Welland’s Trail 150 will help to replace the urban canopy that has been lost due to the Emerald Ash Borer. Approximately 1,000 trees are gone from the island and 20% of trees in Welland have been removed.  Citizens have chosen of a variety of trees to purchase, including: Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Silver Maple, Northern Catalpa, Horse Chestnut, Sycamore, Red Oak, White Oak, Kentucky Coffee, Red Maple, Hickory, Linden, Elm, Locust and White Pine.

The Canada 150 in Welland Committee is also pleased to announce we have been chosen to the #TDCommonGround Project, a year-long celebration that will grow and enhance parks and green spaces across the country, bringing communities together in exciting and diverse ways. In 2017, TD Tree Days will be a part of our #TDCommonGround celebrations, with thousands of volunteers coming together to further enhance their local green spaces by planting trees and shrubs at over 150 sites across Canada.

As TD’s flagship volunteer and urban greening program, TD Tree Days provides TD employees, their families and friends, and community, the opportunity to volunteer and help build healthy, vibrant communities by caring for their local environment.

It's Not too late to purchase a tree for the program. Details can be found at www.canada150inwelland.com
